Where were you on 9/11?

12 years ago on September 11th, 2001 shortly after 8:46am, I recieved a phone call from my grandmother "Brett, wake up a plane (Flight 11) just hit the World Trade Center." Puzzled, I turned on the television and sure enough one of the North Tower of the World Trade Center was consumed in fire and smoke. A few minutes later I watched as the second plane, Flight 175 hit the South Tower on live television. I couldn't believe my eyes, never have I seen anything like it. Instantly, like many other people, I knew this wasn't an accident, we were being attacked.

What you don't know is I was 18 years old and getting ready to move into a dorm that week at the University of Cincinnati. That Tuesday, September 11th, I had planned to spend with my grandmother getting bedroom sheets and blankets. Eventually we did go to the mall, but not before I saw Flight 77 fly into the Pentagon, the South Tower collapse, Flight 93 crash into Shanksville, PA, and the North Tower Collapse. Quite the series of events. Sometime that afternoon we eventually made it to the mall. The thing I remember most was going to a restaurant at the food court and talking to the young lady behind the register. Talking about the events caused her to break down in tears. It was then at that moment when it really hit me, it really showed me the magnitude of the incident, how big of an event this really was. The United States was forever changed.

A year later some friends and I took a baseball stadium road trip and had the chance to stop by Ground Zero. It was one of the most jaw dropping experiences I've ever had. It looked like one gigantic hole in the ground.

In May and early June of 2011 my wife and I were fortunate enough to get the chance to visit Shanksville, Washington D.C., and New York. We made it a priority to visit all the memorials (Flight 93 Memorial, Pentagon Memorial, and Ground Zero). Unfortunately all the exhibits at all the locations (with the exception of the Pentagon) were still being built, but most importantly we were still able to pay our respects to the lives lost on that day. I highly recommend visiting those sites the next time you are thinking about taking a road trip or vacation. It is truly an experience.

This year in March, I had the opportunity to visit Ground Zero in New York City and see the 9/11 memorial as well as the finishing touches of One World Trade Center. While it was a cold and rainy day, it didn't changed the fact that the memorials were amazing. These sites are places that everyone should make a priority to visit at some point.

Not counting the hijackers, 2,977 brave civilians, firefighters, police officers, and military personnel lost their lives that day. This Tuesday let us remember where we were that day and how many lives were affected. Take a moment to remember those who lost their lives.

We'd love to hear your story. Feel free to visit our Facebook Page and tell us where you were on 9/11/2001.

Now Carrying Maui Jim!

We are excited to announce that we will now be carrying Maui Jim sunglasses in the following offices:

Beechmont
Kenwood
Symmes Township
Florence

To give you a little more information about who Maui Jim is, please read some of the information below.

(information provided by MauiJim.com)

How it all began

Now the fastest growing premium polarized sunglass maker in the world, Maui Jim got its start in 1980 as a small company selling sunglasses on the beach in Lahaina, Hawaii. Seeing a need in the market for technology that could combat intense glare and harmful UV while bringing the brilliant colors of the island to life, our fledgling company engineered the revolutionary PolarizedPlus® lens. Incorporated into seven new sunglass styles, our Classic Collection was introduced. And with that, we have steadily built a cult following.

High-Performance Milestones

Over the years, Maui Jim has continued to offer our fans high-performance design developments. In 2004, PolarizedPlus®2 technology revolutionized the sunglass market - patented, color-enhancing treatments in the form of rare earth elements were added to our lenses to really pop the colors your eye takes in.

In 2006, our new 24,000 sq ft state-of-the-art direct surfacing lab was built to ensure precision prescription optics. A year later, we introduced MauiReaders®. MauiPassportTM followed in 2008, offering prescription wearers wide views and outstanding acuity. That same year, our new MauiHTTM lens brought clarity to low-light conditions.

It's All About the View

The Aloha Spirit permeates our philosophy at Maui Jim. Our “ohana” (Hawaiian for family) is passionate about creating the best sunglasses on the planet. Because at the end of the day, we want to see the world at its best - and we know that you do, too, no matter where you live. Aloha, friends!

Memorial Day: A Day to Remember

(By Jimmy Orr)

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led
It seems to signal to the skies
That the blood of heroes never dies
("In Flanders Fields" by Monica Michael)

Remembering on Memorial Day
Monday, May 30, is Memorial Day. Everybody loves a parade, right? Dacula has the best Memorial Day parade this side of the Mississippi and perhaps the best parade in the entire United States. Everybody loves a cookout, right? After all, isn't parades, hamburgers, hot dogs, barbeque ribs what Memorial Day is all about? Not so.

Memorial Day is a day set aside to observe the memory of our fallen warriors in all wars. There is a lot of history associated with Memorial Day. I encourage you to venture out into cyberspace and read all you can about this special day. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings. Over a dozen cities lay claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. Evidence points out that there were organized groups in the South decorating graves of the fallen with flowers before the end of the Civil War or as I would say, the War of Northern Aggression.

Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day which lays down with what I stated in the previous paragraph where the graves of fallen warriors were decorated with flowers. Memorial Day was not officially proclaimed until May 5, 1868, by Union General John A. Logan and observed on May 30.

Memorial Day did not become common until after World War II when it was given its official name by Federal law in 1967. On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill which moved Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day), Veterans Day, and Memorial Day to a specified Monday in order to create a three day weekend. Just like a bunch of bureaucrats to mess up what should be a solemn assembly when we recognize our fallen warriors and the past and present members of our armed forces.

Since 1987, Hawaii's Senator Daniel Inouye, a World War II veteran, has repeatedly introduced measures to return Memorial Day to its traditional date of May 30. I support Senator Inouye's measure as well as supporting the return of Veterans (Armistice) Day to its traditional date of November 11, regardless of what day in the week the day falls on with the exception of Sunday. Should either day fall on a Sunday, the following Monday should be observed. This should satisfy the bureaucrats.

Ohio Fallen Heroes Monument
In closing, let me say this -- enjoy the parade and enjoy your cookout but, set aside a period of time when you observe, in your own way, the memory of our fallen warriors. For me, that moment will begin at daylight at my flagpole. I will raise the flag to full staff and then lower the flag to half staff where it will remain at half staff until noon. At noon, I will return the flag to full staff. Afterwards, I will make my way on over to the Fallen Heroes Memorial located on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center where I will pay my respect to our fallen warriors in the memorial ceremony that begins at 1 p.m. -- especially to honor the memory of Lance Corporal Joseph "Ryan" Giese, United States Marine Corps, who was killed in action January 2011, while serving in Afghanistan. His name will be added to the Fallen Heroes monument Monday.

The way I see it, Memorial Day is a day to remember that the blood of heroes never dies.

Protect Your Eyesight!

By: Wisconsin Optometric Association

For the past four decades, March has been Save Your Vision Month.

It has played a critical role in educating the public on the importance of proper vision and eye health care.

Championing this cause are members of the Wisconsin Optometric Association, who want to remind everyone to protect their eyes in school, at home, while playing sports and, perhaps most importantly, at work.

Dr. Lisa Slaby of the WOA

Whether using a computer or a sledge hammer to get the job done, the WOA reports visual discomfort, eye strain and eye injuries in the workplace are not only common, but cost billions in lost productivity each year. Research indicates that 2,000 U.S. workers sustain job-related eye injuries requiring medical treatment each day, 90 percent of which could be prevented with simple safety steps.

"Healthy vision is critical to successfully completing job-related tasks," said Dr. Lisa Slaby, optometrist and president of the Wisconsin Optometric Association. "While most people think of construction or manufacturing as high-risk occupations where eye injuries are prevalent, even jobs requiring 'smart phones,' laptops and desktop computers can cause vision problems if not used properly. Small steps can make big changes to ease vision strain."

Go easy on the PDA

Nearly half of all Americans spend five or more hours per day using a computer or a PDA, according to the American Optometric Association's Eye-Q survey. Prolonged use of electronic devices may lead to symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome such as eye strain, dry eyes, headaches, fatigue, blurred vision and loss of focus.

The WOA encourages all users of this type of technology to follow the recommendations below:
Take a 20 second break.

• Rest eyes by taking a 20-second break from the screen and looking at something 20 feet away.

• Increase your electronic device's font size so it can be used at a distance more comfortable for your eyes.

• View screens at moderate brightness, not too bright or too dim.

• Reduce glare to ease reading; this can make a bigger difference than increasing the font.

• Position devices slightly below eye level; this makes it easier for eyes to focus on reading material.

Safer sight on-site

Many professions -- from auto repair to health care -- require protective eyewear to help reduce the risk of eye injuries. Yet the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in about 60 percent of eye injury cases, workers failed to wear proper protective eyewear.

The WOA and AOA encourage workers to understand the eye safety dangers of their profession, and to wear proper, fitted eye protection at all times. The associations also urge those who work in dangerous environments to be proactive in replacing eyewear that is old or damaged.

Corporate Office Moves North

Our new Evendale office.
These past couple of weeks have been quite crazy. Our corporate office began last week preparing to move from Price Hill (west side of Cincinnati) to Evendale (14 miles north of Cincinnati). On Monday March 7th, the move was made official. All corporate staff members are in their offices and some continue to unpack. The move was essential as we were running out of space in our old location. Our insurance department and Western Hills office still remains in the same shopping center that our corporate office was located in. Much appreciation goes out to our wonderful and loyal patient base. You have allowed us to grow and provide the best eye care products and services.

Where our corporate office was.

Since 1914 Wing Eyecare has been located on the west side of Cincinnati. It started when Dr. Philip A. Wing opened a small private optometry practice in Price Hill and has since grown to 11 offices around the greater Cincinnati and northern Kentucky areas. To our wonderful patients: we hope you continue to give us the opportunity to provide for you. To prospective patients: we hope you give us the opportunity to provide for you. Thank you!

Be sure to "Like Us" on Facebook for exclusive offers, contests & giveaways, events, and much more!

Update: We will be having a March Madness giveaway starting next week! If you are from the greater Cincinnati or northern Kentucky area Be sure to "Like Us" for details!
